SETAC Celebrates NAIDOC Week 2025 at the Port Cygnet Cannery
The South East Tasmanian Aboriginal Corporation (SETAC) proudly celebrated NAIDOC Week 2025 with a powerful series of events that honoured culture, truth, and community spirit.
The week commenced with a Wreath Laying Ceremony—a moment of reflection to honour Elders past and present. This was followed by a deeply moving Flag Lowering and Raising Ceremony at the Port Cygnet Cannery, symbolising resilience, renewal, and the strength of Palawa identity.
A Smoking Ceremony opened the day’s events, cleansing the space and bringing people together in cultural unity. The smoke curled into the winter sky as locals and visitors gathered for Community Voices, where stories were shared with honesty and heart.
In the evening, the Fireside Yarn offered a relaxed, intimate space for Storytelling and laughter. Stories from across generations were exchanged, reminding everyone that culture lives strongest when it's shared.
The week also highlighted themes of Treaty and Truth-Telling, with conversations grounded in honesty, healing, and hope for a future shaped by Aboriginal leadership and voices.
A Cultural Burn at Burton's Reserve rounded out the week, reconnecting people to traditional land management practices. The event was both practical and spiritual, led with care and deep knowledge.
SETAC’s NAIDOC Week was a beautiful expression of strength, survival and celebration—where every story, every voice, and every flame mattered.
